Il journal è splendido, sempre ricco e vario, spazia da articoli storici ad AAR a review di libri, miniature e regolamenti e commenti su eventi e convention.
Il numero appena uscito è fortemente condizionato dai resoconti del Battle Day 2010, la giornata organizzata dal SOA su di uno scenario storico. Quest'anno la scelta è stata Zama. Qui la gallery dei tavoli.
come riportato da Mark Watson in apertura del numero gli articoli forniscono una buona analisi della quantità di partite giocate e dell'ampio range a disposizione dei wargamers in termini di regolamente, scale e approcci nella ricostruzione di scenari storici.
purtroppo Field of Glory non è stato presentato da nessuno dei partecipanti. Peccato. Chiederò agli amici di SoA il motivo.
vi segnalo anche l'articolo sulla battaglia di Dertosa, combattuta nel 215 BC tra romani e cartaginesi. La battaglia, combattuta in Spagna, avrebbe dovuto consentire ad Asdrubale di arrrivare in Italia in soccorso del not fratello Annibale. Asdrubale però avrebbe dovuto prima sconfiggere l'esercito dei fratelli Scipione, padre e zio di Scipione l'Africano (l'eroe di Zama).
Secondo l'autore Asdrubale era stato istruito (o consigliato) dal fratello maggiore sull'utilizzo della tattica di accerchiamento da lui usata con successo a Canne l'anno precedente.
Dalla ricostruzione effettuata dall'autore di ordini di battaglia e forze in campo sembra trovare conferma la tesi che in effetti Asdrubale tentò l'aggiramento doppio ma i poco motivati fanti spagnoli, posizionati al centro, ruppero subito facendo saltare il piano di battaglia.
La sconfitta fu grave ed imedì ad Asdrubale di arrivare in Italia.
Last issues of the Journal of the Society of Ancients arrived a couple of days ago. Slingshot is amazing, always rich and varied, it encompasses articles on history and battles, AAR, books, miniatures and ruleset reviews, comments on events and conventions.
Last issue is greatly influenced by the Battle Day 2010 account, the day organized by SoA on a specific battle. This year the one selected was Zama. Here you can look at some pictures of the day.
As reported by Mark Watson at the beginning of the issue "articles give a good reflection of the breadth of games on the day and also the range of choices open to wargamers in terms of rules, scales and overall approaches to gaming historical battles."
Suddenly Field of Glory was not present. What a pity! I’ll ask to SoA friends the reason.
I’d like to recommend an article on Dertosa Battle, fought in 215 BC between Romans and Carthaginians. The battle, that take place in Spain, should allow Hasdrubal to arrive in Italy to support his well known brother Hannibal. Hasdrubal, however, should have first defeat the army of brothers Scipio, father and uncle of Scipio Africanus (hero of Zama).
According to the author Hasdrubal was informed (and advised) by his brother on using the same tactic that brought him to the resounding victory of Cannae the year before.
Reconstruction made by the author of battle orders and strengths it seems to be confirmed the thesis of Hasdrubal trying the double envelopment but the under-motivated Spanish infantry route immediately breaking the carthaginians plans.
The defeat was not as important as Metaurus but prevented Hasdrubal from arriving in Italy.
