Okay, I often say I'm a pretty open-minded guy, but when it comes to contemporary Christianity I often find myself closing those doors, if not straight out bolting when approached by Christian ideology in any form. What often gets lost in my ignorance, whether I think it's all bunk or not, is that there are Christians who are pretty down to earth and savvy people, and who aren't rabid conversionists, god's army builders, or take-advantage-of-the-weak tv/stadium preachers. Case in point the ministers Mike Foster and Craig Gross documented in Bill Day's Missionary Positions.Missionary Positions is about Mike and Craig's crusade against porn through their creation of what is called XXXChurch. Dubbed the #1 Christian Porn Site, which is actually a site for people who are suffering from porn addiction to get help. What sets this apart from much recent documenting of such movements, is that Mike and Craig are, like I said, pretty down to earth. Sure they have their beliefs, the church and the whole shebang, but overall they're just a couple of decent guys trying to make a go of something to help people they see who are struggling.
What is illuminating is simply their journey to create something, and like any dream that endevours to become a reality it is beset with problems on all sides. Whether it's their fellow Christians who don't want to face the issue and pronounce it a problem amongst their followers, or it's the plethora of media sources who simply want to make fun of them in their quest, Mike and Craig carry on attempting to bring their idea to life.
Bill Day, who isn't a Christian, has tapped into something here that sits closer to the middle of the whole believer/non-believer issue that is polarizing each side further and further, especially in the states. Instead of simply presenting the ministers as 'Christians', he presents them as people who are trying to do some good in the world as they see it. We may not agree with their beliefs or even in what they are trying to do, but it's hard to deny that we can't relate to them as people in their need to accomplish something they believe in.
You can find it here on a great documentary site. You might have to scroll down to find it.
